Yay birthday month! Honestly, the actual birthday day has never been a big deal for me. I use my birthday as a time to sit and reflect on what the past year has brought me, where I am with my goals and where I want the next year to go. What most people do on New Years Day. Because of this I have found my birthday to be rather personal and something I keep to myself. I do use the day as a personal princess day, I try to only do what I want and I never know until the day what that will be. To celebrate my October princess month, I’m giving away a pair of my Fire Opal earrings because opals are my birthstone!

As a kid I liked ice cream, every kid likes ice cream. But I didn’t love it, I merely liked it. Several years ago my like for ice cream became a raging LOVE. It was all because of some boat work done in 100 degree heat. Others would crave a cold beer at the end of the day, not me, all I wanted was ice cream or popsicles. Delicious popsicles, orange of course, they’re the best. An orange popsicle to me is the definition of summer.

When I’m wandering around down here on my adventures I spend a lot of time pondering. There is a lot of time to stare into space and contemplate the state of the universe and why chocolate is so delicious and other important matters. This year I’ve been pondering about adventures themselves. What exactly is an adventure? I had planned on being in the bahamas right now, snorkeling and sailing and I’m not. Yet I feel like I’m on a grand adventure. Last week I made my first edible loaf of bread in my tiny little boat oven! The oxford dictionary defines adventure as “an unusual and exciting or daring experience”. Was my bread very unusual and exciting? To me it was. I think that is part of the puzzle I’m pondering, what constitutes an adventure? An adventure is a subjective experience. We each have our own versions of adventures. I’m adding a new goal to 2017, to have an adventure every day. To lead an adventurous life. And I have a idea I’m tinkering around with that I could use your help with. I am putting together a list of adventures, like take a bus to the end of the line to see what’s there, or stroll along a riverbank, or hike to the top of a hill.

New year, new years resolutions. Not. It seems silly to start a resolution just because of a calendar. If you want to change something, do it. I do however have several rituals that coincide with the new year. I do an annual review both personal and professional. And I set goals for the coming year, both personal and professional. And I pick a word to guide me for the year.

This year my word is Implement. I have a whole bunch of plans that have been on the drawing board for way too long. Time to do them.

Continuing on with the multicultural theme this month, the words Thank You. Two little words that carry so much meaning. To all of you I say Thank You for being such great amigos, for supporting my work and allowing me to live my crazy, colourful life. On my to do list this month is to design a new thank you card that goes out with each online order. My current card is the words Thank You spelled out in beads. I like this a lot. I’m going to design a new card and I think it would be fun to continue with the theme and say thank you in several different languages, all spelled in beads. I LOVE all the fabulously different greetings! When you live in such a multicultural city as Toronto it’s important to be able to greet people in so many languages. From Swahili to Gaelic to Danish, just read the comments on this post and you’ll be friends with so many people!

It is still hot hot hot and then more hot! I am so thankful for my excellent air conditioner in the studio! When you sit in front of a torch that is 1700 degrees the air con is a must. And I’m sitting in front of that torch a lot because, you know, xmas is coming. (And because it’s fun and I like it). I’ve been busy making water opals today so I decided that this month I am giving away a Water Opal pendant.

Can you believe how hot this summer is? I’m loving it! I’m also incredibly thankful for the kick ass air conditioning system in the studio because sitting in front of a flame in this heat would be unbearable without it. I’m also thankful that I live close to Lake Ontario and can go and sit on the waterfront. Somehow just sitting by the water makes everything so much cooler doesn’t it? So what do you do to cool off when the temperature skyrockets? How do you chill out?

Picnics. It’s hot. Too hot to cook inside. And you know I mentioned home renovations? Well I currently don’t have a kitchen at home so there’s been a lot of picnics. I love filling a basket with yummies and biking down to the waterfront for an alfresco meal. I adore taking cutlery to a farmers market and putting together something delicious while lounging on a blanket under a tree. So let’s talk about picnic food, because I will always talk food.
